Man Faces Robbery Charge After Shoving Security Guard

Mentor man is accused of shoving security guard after trying to return stolen knife set to department store

A Mentor man faces a robbery charge and a pair of theft counts after he was accused of scuffling with a department store security guard earlier this month.

Michael Brzozowski, 28, took a knife set from the JC Penney in Mentor and tried to return it as if he had bought it on Aug. 16, Mentor Police Sgt. Richard Slovenkay said.

At first, Brzozowski showed a fake ID when the cashier asked him for identification, Slovenkay said. However, the cashier was suspicious when the photo on the license looked nothing like him.

Brzozowski then showed the cashier his real license, Slovenkay said. The cashier, in turn, gave him a gift card for store credit.

A suspicious security guard tried to detain Brzozowski afterward but he refused to cooperate. The two scuffled and Brzozowski shoved her to the ground and ran away, Slovenkay said.

However, Brzozowski had already showed his ID so police were able to identify him and arrest him later, Slovenkay said.

He was arraigned Friday in and Judge John Trebets set his bond at $100,000, which was not posted.

Brzozowski faces a second theft charge because he is also accused of stealing a Browns jersey from Kohl's earlier this month, according to court documents.
