Puppy Mill Rescues, Garage Sales & Raw Egg Roulette: A Week In Review

Catch some of the big news that happened in Mentor this week

1. Mentor's anti-puppy mill champion, Marilyn's Voice, Inc. became involved in the fate of almost 300 small dogs last week who were from a puppy mill just outside Shelby, about two hours southwest of Mentor.

The dogs' owner, an elderly woman in hospice care, surrended custody of about 240 Chihuahuas and 40 Shar-Peis to the Humane Society of Richland County on Tuesday.

Marilyn's Voice is taking care of 15 of the Chihuahuas. .

2. Mentor City Council is considering an ordinance that would place some limits on garage sales in the city. If passed the ordinance would require people to:

  • get a permit to have a garage sale. The permit would be free and available online, Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said during the meeting.
  • have no more than two garage sales per year, which could last no longer than three consecutive days.
  • not hang or post signs advertising the garage sale on utility poles, traffic signs or in the public right of way.
  • not hold the garage sale before 9 a.m. or after to 7 p.m.
  • have "adequate traffic supervision" to prevent logjams.

Assistant City Manager Anthony Zampedro said the issue came up after Mentor residents complained to the Council members about neighbors who held perpetual garage sales.

3. A Mentor-on-the-Lake , Achievement Centers for Children, a charity that assists children with disabilities, which is headquartered in Highland Hills.

Jennifer Summers, 39, -- attempted grand theft, attempted unauthorized use of property and attempted communications fraud -- and Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Eileen Gallagher sentenced her Wednesday morning.

4. A Mentor-on-the-Lake man was convicted of attempted voyeurism today in .

David Kelly, 42, pleaded no contest and was found guilty of attempted voyeurism and failing to follow police orders.

A man called police after he saw a stranger, Kelly, looking into the window of his daughter's bedroom at about 6 a.m. Thursday, Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Chief John Gielink said.
