Teenager Faces Robbery Charge After Shoplifting Incident

A teenager faces a robbery charge after he was caught shoplifting at the Walmart in Mentor, Mentor Police Lt. Tim Allen said.

A security guard spotted Timothy Zaby, 18, of Painesville, taking clothes and three watches from the department store Tuesday evening, Allen said.

Zaby put on the stolen pants, shorts, shirt and hat to make it less conspicuous, Allen said. All totalled, he nabbed $96 worth of merchandise.

However, authorities didn't find what really got Zaby in trouble until police stopped and searched him, Allen said.

When the officer searched Zaby, they found a 10-inch butterfly knife that he had in shorts he was wearing beneath his pants, Allen said.

Consequently, authorities charged Zaby with a felony robbery instead of a misdemeanor theft because he had a deadly weapon on him at the time of the shoplifting, Allen said.

Zaby was arraigned Wednesday morning in . Judge John Trebets set his bond at $50,000, which was not posted.

Zaby's next court hearing is scheduled for August 9.
