The girl fell by accident, authorities said.

The girl had climbed on a bed that was adjacent to the window. The window was already open but had a screen in place. However, it looks like the girl knocked the screen out when she leaned against it, Mentor Fire Deputy Chief Robert Searles said previously.

The girl fell about 20 feet and landed on grass. Paramedics took her to Hillcrest Hospital from where she has since been released.

As a safety tip, Searles noted that people who have children in their homes can make them safer by arranging the furniture so kids cannot reach windows.

Additionally, there are ways to make it so windows can lock when they are partly opened, he said. He recommended people retrofit their windows in such a way as part of baby proofing.
