Toddler In Stable Condition After Falling From Apartment Window

Girl fell about 20 feet at Mentor Mall Village Apartments

An 18-month-old girl fell about through a window of building D in the Mentor Mall Village Apartment complex at about 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Mentor Fire Deputy Chief Robert Searles.

The girl had climbed on a bed that was adjacent to the window. The window was already open but had a screen in place. However, it looks like the girl knocked the screen out when she leaned against it, Searles said.

The girl fell about 20 feet to the ground below.

Fortunately, the injuries are not thought to be life threatening, Searles said. The girl was in stable condition when paramedics arrived and they took her to Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, he added.

Mentor Police Lt. Ken Zbiegien said the extent of the girl's injuries are not yet known because she is still being treated.

The incident is under investigation, Zbiegien said.

No additional information is available at the moment.

As a safety tip, Searles noted that people who have children in their homes can make them safer by arranging the furniture so kids cannot reach windows.

Additionally, there are ways to make it so windows can lock when they are partly opened, he said. He recommended people retrofit their windows in such a way as part of baby proofing.
