2 BP Workers Killed In Toledo-Area Refinery Fire: Reports

The refinery remained offline Wednesday after a massive plume of smoke and flames was visible from the facility.

OREGON, OH — Two BP workers were killed in connection with a fire Tuesday at the company's Toledo-area refinery, according to reports.

BP initially reported the employees were hurt, but confirmed Wednesday morning that they had died, according to NBC News.

The first 911 call about the blaze at the Oregon facility was made shortly before 7 p.m., NBC News reported. Photos and videos circulating on Twitter showed a massive plume of smoke and flames coming from the refinery, which can process up to 160,000 barrels of crude oil per day, according to BP.

The cause of Tuesday’s incident remains unknown, although leaking fumes out of a crude unit could be a factor, Reuters reported, adding the fire was extinguished Tuesday and the refinery remained offline Wednesday.

The facility also had a fire in November 2021, although no one was injured in that incident, according to NBC News.
