📰 News we're reading

1. TARTA Board approves service investment, boosts frequency on key routes (hollandsfj.us) — TARTA is rolling out $480,000 in winter service upgrades that will change how Toledo-area riders get to work, school, and medical appointments starting Sunday, Jan. 25. Expect more frequent 30-minute service on several key routes, later evening hours, a new Route 18 to Meijer on Alexis, and simplified routes without confusing letter branches, all shaped by rider feedback.

2. Frank P. Stiles, 1938-2025: Retired detective sergeant and chief investigator solved thousands of cases (toledoblade.com subscription) — Longtime Toledo police detective sergeant Frank P. Stiles, who helped crack the Cook brothers serial murder cases and later led investigations for the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, has died at 87. A Waite High graduate and former Toledo Golden Gloves champion, he was celebrated for solving thousands of felonies and mentoring younger officers, and his family is holding private services.

3. Handle with care: Ads in apps, streaming services help reduce shaken baby cases in Lucas County (toledoblade.com subscription) — Toledo and Lucas County officials say a creative ad campaign and hotline support are helping reduce abusive head trauma and infant deaths in several Toledo ZIP codes. Using streaming apps, local attractions, and 24/7 nurse lines, the effort pushes a simple message to stressed caregivers: keep babies safe, then walk away and use the many resources available nearby.

4. Producing livestock in Toledo's backyard (toledofreepress.com) — Livestock farms in and around Toledo, especially in Lucas County and neighboring counties, are still a key source of meat and dairy for local grocery shelves despite urban sprawl. The story follows a large nearby dairy operation using advanced animal-welfare and manure-to-energy technology, and explains how regional farms support Toledo shoppers while working to protect water quality in Lake Erie.

5. Mix of veteran leaders, talented freshmen has Northview girls basketball primed for more success (toledoblade.com subscription) — Northview’s girls basketball team is off to an 8-1 start, highlighted locally by a dominant win at Toledo Christian and strong showings against area powers like Central Catholic and Anthony Wayne. Led by seniors Grace Krahl and Jenna Clausius and breakout freshman Callie Cox, the Wildcats are eyeing a league title and key upcoming matchups many Toledo fans follow closely.
