📰 News we're reading

1. Snow Angels Shoveling Program Helps Keep Toledo Safe This Winter (toledocitypaper.com) — Toledo residents can get or give help shoveling snow this winter through the City of Toledo’s Snow Angels program, which pairs volunteers with older adults and neighbors with disabilities. With more requests than volunteers, the city is urging locals to sign up so sidewalks, driveways, and neighborhood routes stay safer and more accessible after each snowfall.

2. King Bridge lighting, mechanical work keeps lanes closed; adjoining Riverwalk phase advances (toledoblade.com subscription) — Drivers using the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge should expect several-hour lane and occasional full closures into early next year as Toledo finishes new mechanical work and programmable lighting. The project ties directly into Metroparks Toledo’s expanding Glass City Riverwalk, adding protected bike lanes, riverfront paths, docks, and new overlooks connecting downtown, East Toledo, and Vistula neighborhoods.

3. Toledo Walleye face potential strike after no agreement was reached with the ECHL (13abc.com) — Toledo Walleye fans may see Friday’s packed Huntington Center game canceled as players threaten to strike starting December 26 amid stalled contract talks with the ECHL. With little communication from the team, season ticket holders and gift-givers are left wondering about refunds and the fate of 25 remaining home games.

4. Ability Center Seeks Help with Assistance Dogs (toledocitypaper.com) — A century-old nonprofit, the Ability Center of Greater Toledo, is urgently seeking local volunteers to raise and foster assistance dogs that support people with mobility disabilities in Lucas County and beyond. Puppies rotate between volunteer homes and a prison training program before being matched with clients who gain independence at home and in public. All food, vet care, and training support are covered for screened volunteers.

5. Positive outlook, sense of humor help Toledo man mark 103 years (toledoblade.com subscription) — A 103-year-old lifelong Toledo resident, Sandy Horwitz, is celebrating his milestone birthday at Sunset House on Indian Road, surrounded by family and memories from a century in this city. From growing up on Kenilworth Avenue to cheering on the University of Toledo Rockets, he credits his long life to optimism, close relationships, and staying active in Toledo’s community.
