Youngstown Foundation approves $1.8 million in grants benefitting local projects (mahoningmatters.com) — More than $1.8 million in new Youngstown Foundation grants will boost local shelters, youth programs, arts education, and mental health services across Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. Funding includes major support for the Rescue Mission’s shelter expansion, a new first responder wellness center in Boardman, and numerous Youngstown-based nonprofits serving students, families, and residents in need.

YSU-led export study highlights Ohio's global trade (vindy.com) — Youngstown State University is leading a major study of seven years of Ohio export data to better support local manufacturers, students, and policymakers. The YSU team’s 160-page analysis highlights which industries and global markets drive Ohio’s trade strength, and how companies adapted through COVID-19. Local businesses can use the public report to plan export growth and workforce needs.

3. Harambee of Youngstown recognizes the first night of Kwanzaa (wkbn.com) — Youngstown families gathered at New Bethel Baptist Church on Saturday to mark the first night of Kwanzaa with music, dance, and a focus on unity. Harambee of Youngstown, one of the area’s earliest Kwanzaa organizers, has additional celebrations planned throughout the week, giving residents multiple chances to connect with the holiday’s principles and local history.

Edison students present ideas in Biomed IV class (weirtondailytimes.com) — Edison High School’s Biomed IV students, guided partly by a Youngstown-based Stat-Medivac flight medic, designed more efficient emergency room layouts and presented their ideas to school leaders. The new capstone course lets juniors and seniors explore real-world healthcare challenges, from ER workflow to infection control, while also touring local hospitals and Franciscan University’s nursing facilities to deepen their research.

5. Vienna looks to be proactive about data centers (tribtoday.com) — Vienna Township leaders are updating zoning rules now so any future AI data centers near the Youngstown Air Reserve Station face clear limits on lighting, noise, and power use. They’re weighing how to attract potential investment without harming residents, including possible on-site “pocket plants” for electricity and higher tax revenue from currently low-tax land. Nearby Hubbard residents are also pressing officials to prepare ordinances before any project is announced.
