Here are the top three stories today in Tulsa:
- A Tulsa kindergarten teacher and her daughter have written a book aimed at educating others about diversity. Crystal Turner, who teaches at Dove Science Academy, and her daughter Christiana wrote “Your Black is Beautiful” after Turner had to "explain to [Christiana] why kids from another race wouldn’t play with her." Turner hopes this book will "help educate America’s educators about the importance of diversity and also about making sure [their] classrooms are culturally responsive," she said. (KRMG)
- Activists are working with Tulsa’s Paws on Pearl to create a better environment for the animals it cares for. The changes come after a video was leaked in January 2021 of an employee dragging a dog through the facility. Even after installing cameras and requiring background checks, activists called for more change and are now working with the facility to instill adequate practices with an independent review panel. “They’re interested not just in solving this problem but making sure this never happens again anywhere in the state of Oklahoma,” said Tamara Lebak, founder of the Restorative Justice Institute of Oklahoma. - A woman was found dead in front of a Tulsa home on Friday morning with what may be gunshot wounds, according to Tulsa police. A neighbor spotted a woman on a porch near West 63rd Pl North and North Denver Ave who then called the police. Police say the victim is a woman who they believed was living at the house. Police are still investigating the incident and interviewing family and neighbors. (news9.com KWTV)
