Here are the top four stories today in Tulsa:
- This past weekend, students interested in medical school attended a conference at Tulsa Community College (TCC) to learn more about how they can prepare for their careers. Organizers hope this seminar will help students plan out their future and address the growing shortage of doctors in Oklahoma. Students talked to medical school advisors and current medical students about what they could expect to see. This is the first conference they have held as part of the Undergraduate Medical Accelerator Program, but they are hoping to expand it in the future. (news9.com KWTV)
- On Saturday, a candlelight vigil was held for a Tulsa woman, Tyra Whitaker, who has been missing since January. Whitaker’s son wanted to throw a birthday party for his mother, who was born on Apr. 23. The vigil was held at the parking lot where Whitaker was last seen. (KOKI FOX 23 TULSA)
- A partnership between Project SEARCH, Tulsa Tech, Saint Francis, Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, University of Oklahoma Outreach, and Employment Resources, Inc., is offering new opportunities for students at Tulsa Tech with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Students must be between 18 and 24 years old and be a client of DRS or in the process of applying for services. Competitive Employability Readiness Training (CERT) at the school has two components: a nine-month program that combines internships with classroom learning, and a culinary training program to learn various food preparations techniques. - Tulsa Transit is offering free rides to help with high gas prices. The Tulsa Transit Bus System will encourage Tulsans to climb aboard and try the transit for free from May 1 through Jun. 30. Riders can download the SPOT app to track their bus in real-time. (News On 6)
