Gresham Mushroom Picker Missing By Trillium Lake Found Safe

Search and rescue people found 80-year-old Steven Souvannaraj by Trillium Lake in Mt. Hood National Forest. He was unharmed.

GRESHAM, OR — On Tuesday morning, Steven Souvannaraj left his home in Gresham to head to the Trillium Lake area to go hunting for mushrooms.

By 4 p.m., he hadn't returned. 911 was called.

Clackamas Search and Rescue teams immediately headed to search Mt. Hood Forest, near the lake.

They worked through the night, joined the following morning by new teams.

Early Wednesday afternoon, they caught a break. A passerby noticed the 80-year-old Souvannaraj by a rock quarry near the lake. The person reported the sighting and ground searchers quickly headed to the quarry.

A medical team cleared Souvannaraj, and he walked out with his rescuers.

Back at the command post and reunited with his family and friends, he filled them in on what happened.

On Tuesday, he was out in the forest looking for mushrooms when he came across a person who had gotten lost. After helping the person find their way back, Souvannaraj realized that he'd lost his keys.

Attempting to retrace his steps, he became lost.
