Here are the top three stories in Portland today:
- The Oregon Department of Human Services and the Oregon Department of Education announced that 434,000 eligible children in Oregon will be receiving $391 each in food benefits over the next few weeks as part of a pandemic-era program to provide support to children who depend on school food programs. Children eligible for pandemic EBT (P-EBT) include those who were eligible for National School Lunch Program meals during the 2021-2022 school year and students who were under the age of 6 and enrolled in SNAP in the summer of 2022. - Two of the victims from Saturday's triple homicide shooting were identified as high school students by Portland Public Schools. Eskender Tamra, 17, was a junior at Franklin High School, and Isaac Daudi, 19, was a senior at Roosevelt High School; the third victim was identified by police as Patrick D. Johnson Jr., 20. As reported previously, the weekend shooting is the deadliest shooting in Portland so far this year; as of Wednesday afternoon, officials had not made an arrest. (OregonLive)
- The Brazilian Carnaval Ball is returning to Portland this Saturday, Apr. 1 at the Bossanova Ballroom. The annual event will feature traditional music, dancing, and food; those interested in attending can learn more about the event and purchase tickets here. Organizers began the event ten years ago as part of their desire to bring the tradition of Brazilian Carnaval to the local community. (Fox 12 Oregon)
