Abington Chess Team Wins Two State Championships

The Abington Ghosts chess team won two State Championships March 5-6.

The Abington Ghosts chess team won two State Championships at the Pennsylvania State Chess Federation Scholastic Championship in Lancaster, PA on March 5th and 6th.

Junior Dennis Phan scored a perfect 5-0 to capture the u1300 State Individual Championship for the Ghosts. This is the second year in a row that an Abington player has claimed this prestigious title.

On the shoulders of Dennis the Ghosts brought home their second consecutive team State Championship in u1300. The team of Dennis, Sasha Serebriiskii, Andrew Nolan, and Nathanael Cheng scored an unprecedented score of 17 points. This total score has not been reached by any winner of this division in the last decade.

Other individual accolades of note in the u1300: Sasha Serebriiskii placed third, Andrew Nolan placed seventh, Nathanael Cheng placed 10th, and Brian Ouzomgi received a medal of commendation for his play.

Abington also fielded a team in the u1000 section. Amin Mojarad, Thomas Dowdy, Hunter West and Chris Ginion placed fourth. Mojarad placed 9th in the division as an individual.

The team will now prepare for the United States Chess Federation Scholastic Championship at the end of the month in Atlanta.
