ABINGTON, PA — Local police are telling residents to be vigilant as there have been an increase in reports of burglaries and thefts lately across the township.

The Abington Police Department says it has seen an increase in residential burglaries and thefts in recent weeks, and officials are telling residents to take precautions so as to not fall victim.

Residents are asked to lock all doors and windows at their homes, keep the home's exterior well lit, make sure valuables are secured and call 911 if there is any suspicious activity on or near the property.

Police also say they have received increased reports of purses and wallets being taken from shopping carts, and that suspects appear to be targeting shoppers who are distracted and leave their personal belongings in their carts as they navigate store aisles at businesses throughout the township.

"Please be aware of your surroundings and keep your purse or wallet on you at all times," Abington Police stated in a community alert.
