Alverthorpe Park Won’t Open To Public Soon, Abington Official Says

Despite speculation online, the board of commissioners won't be opening up the park to non-residents in the near future.

ABINGTON, PA - Abington officials won’t be granting non-residents into Alverthorpe Park anytime soon, according to a statement from the township.

Alverthorpe Park will remain restricted to township residents and their guests until further notice, Abington Board of Commissioners President Thomas Hecker said in an Aug. 16 statement.

“There is speculation that a recommendation to allow access to Alverthorpe Park to non-residents will be approved by the Board of Commissioners,” Hecker said. “This Township Board of Commissioners will not be changing that restriction.”

Alverthorpe Park, which has a Jenkintown address according to its website, offers an array of amenities from baseball, basketball, football and tennis areas to mini-golf, grills, playgrounds, a wading pool, pavilions and walking trail.

The park, which requires visitors to provide proof of Abington residence upon entry, has remained controversial due to its strict policy. Several residents took to social media last month to discuss, representing an array of stances on the matter.
