Bruno to Begin Therapy

Bruno update: The 3-year-old English setter, who had emergency surgery last week, walks and will begin therapy on Monday.

Bruno, the 3-year-old English setter who had emergency surgery last week, will begin physical therapy on Monday, according to Russ Diamond of Bucks County VETS.

“Just like people, he has ups and downs … [and Thursday] was an ‘up,’” Diamond said in an email. “Since he still has his stitches in, he can’t begin his rehabilitation in our hydrotherapy walker (actually an underwater treadmill). We’re hoping to start that therapy on Monday, so we started him on some walking exercises with our “Cavaletti Rails.” It took him a few tries, but he caught on quickly. The idea is to encourage him to lift his hind leg to rebuild motor skills and strength.”

After he was struck by a car, he was taken to Rau Animal Hospital and then Bucks County VETS. The dog suffered a large laceration on his right leg, two fractures of his pelvis, and a severely fractured right leg; Veterinary Referral Center in Malvern performed the surgery on July 11 and Bruno is expected to make a full recovery.

Bruno will be put up for adoption following his physical therapy, which is expected to last four to six weeks.
