Cars Torched at Church

Abington Police say someone intentionally set fire to several vehicles in the lot of a Glenside church.

 

Someone intentionally set fire to two church-owned cars parked at the rear of the New Life Presbyterian Church in the 400 block of Easton Road late Sunday night.

According to police, someone set fire to the interior of two of the vehicles, a Volvo station wagon and a Mercury Mountaineer at about 11:35 p.m. The fire then spread to two other vehicles, a Mazda 929 and a Volvo sedan.

According to police, the fires happened along the fence at the property line of the church near the driveway to Jenkintown Road; two houses close to the location were evacuated as the fire had spread to parts of a tree and a fence.

The church-owned vehicles were slated to be rehabbed, and given to people in need. The station wagon and the Mountaineer were completely destroyed; the Volvo sedan and the Mazda were significantly damaged. There were about seven church-owned vehicles parked in the lot at the time of the fire.

The fire is under investigation by Abington Police, Abington Fire Marshal, and Montgomery County Detectives. Anyone with information about the arson is asked to contact Abington Police Department Detective Division at 267-536-1100, selection #4. Callers may remain anonymous.
