Cheltenham Considers Committee Focused On Walkers, Bikers

Cheltenham Commissioner Jeff Chirico said the committee's creation could be formalized at a meeting on Wednesday night.

CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — Like many communities trying to provide its residents with amenities, the township is trying to create a transportation committee that has nothing to do with vehicles.

Cheltenham Township Commissioner Jeff Chirico said that commissioners will consider the proposed creation of an Active Transportation Committee. They are expected to do so at Wednesday's public works committee meeting.

"Some of you may know that one of my main goals when running for township commissioner was to work to create a more pedestrian and bicyclist-friendly municipality," Chirico said in a Facebook post. "I proposed the formation of this committee last summer as the first step in that goal."

The new committee would support the planning, development, and promotion of infrastructure and programs that prioritize active transportation, like trails, sidewalks, and any other pathways for human-powered movement.

The committee will be made up of township staff and township residents and advised by outside organizations with a particular focus on these issues.

To make the committee formal, the ordinance will be considered at this Wednesday evening's public works committee meeting, and if approved, will be up for a final vote by the Board of Commissioners on May 21 at 7:30 p.m., Chirico said.

He gave special thanks to John C. Raisch of Wyncote for his assistance and support in this effort.
