ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Independence Day is fast approaching so it's time to find out where you can celebrate in and around Abington. Area events include fireworks, festivals, and other Fourth of July fun.

- Glenside July 4th Events —10 a.m., Children's Morning Program held at Renninger Memorial Memorial Park; 4 p.m.: The Grand, Glorious, Patriotic Parade held on a 1.5-mile stretch through Glenside. After Dark: America the Beautiful Aerial Fireworks Spectacular held at Abington Junior and Senior High Schools.
- The Jenkintown Volunteer Fire Department is once again proud to sponsor the Borough’s Annual 4th of July Celebration. This year’s parade will be on Thursday, July 4th, at 10 a.m. with a rain date of Saturday, July 6, at 10 a.m.
- The Rockledge 4th of July Parade will be held on Thursday, July 4, starting at 9 a.m. At 1 p.m., the 4th of July Committee will host the July 4th Fun Festival at Cegielkowski Playground at 27 S. Sylvania Ave. There'll be games, giveaways, and other fun activities.
- Ambler Kiwanis Carnival and Fireworks —Wissahickon High School, Tuesday, July 2 - Saturday, July 6, 6 - 10 p.m. daily. Fireworks: Friday, July 5 (rain date July 6.) Support the Ambler Kiwanis Club and celebrate the 4th of July all week long with rides, games, and carnival food, not to mention one of the best fireworks displays in the area.
- Good Ol’ Summertime 4th of July Celebration —July 4, Noon - 3 p.m. Ice Cream Social. Graeme Park, Horsham Township. Join us for a reading of "The Declaration of Independence," Turn-of-the-Century Dancing by the Tapestry Historic Dance Ensemble, and free ice cream.
- Independence Day Fireworks —Conshohocken Borough, Wednesday, July 3, 9:30 p.m. Celebrate the Fourth of July with an epic firework display visible throughout Conshohocken Borough on Wednesday, July 3. This year’s show starts at dusk (around 9:30 p.m.) and will be large enough to be seen from most vantage points within the borough. Due to safety precautions, Sutcliffe Park and the surrounding areas will be closed during the fireworks.
- Skippack Village 4th of July Parade & Fireworks —Palmer Park & Skippack Village, Thursday, July 4, parade 11 a.m., BBQ at Parc Bistro: 3 p.m., Fireworks: dusk Head to historic Skippack Village for some classic Independence Day festivities; a parade, sparklers, bbq, fireworks, and more!
Today, Americans celebrate the birth of a new nation with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues. Celebrations, though, predate by centuries the designation of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which didn’t happen until 1941.
During the pivotal summer of 1776, the pre-Revolutionary celebrations honoring King George III’s birthday were replaced with mock funerals as a symbolic break from the crown.

It was an exciting time in Philadelphia — the Continental Congress voted to break from the crown and, two days later on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the original 13 colonies —New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia — to adopt the Declaration of Independence.
The first annual commemoration of the nation’s independence was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, while the Revolutionary War was ongoing. Fireworks have been part of Fourth of July festivities since the first celebration in Philadelphia.
