NORRISTOWN, PA — An ex-boyfriend on trial for first-degree murder in the stabbing death of an Abington woman took the stand during his trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse Tuesday and said he never meant to kill the woman, but instead had plans to commit suicide, a local television news station reported.

Gilbert Newton, III, of Philadelphia, is charged with fatally stabbing 18-year-old Morgan McCaffery more than 30 times during an altercation at SEPTA's Meadowbrook Train Station back in July 2020.

Local station CBS 3 Philly reported that Newton took the witness stand Tuesday, the same day jurors heard damning evidence in the form of threatening text messages Newton reportedly sent prior to the killing in which he allegedly said he wanted the woman dead.
