Sex Offenders Targeted In New Scam In Pennsylvania: State Police

PENNSYLVANIA — State police have issued a warning involving a telephone scam in which registered sex offenders are being defrauded.

Scammers have been calling sex offenders registered with the Pennsylvania State Police Megan's Law website saying the individuals are not in compliance with their registration requirements, and that in order to resolve the issue money would be required, according to a bulletin released by the state police on Friday.

The caller claims that the convicted sex offenders can be brought back into compliance with registration requirements if the person obtains some type of cash card and then arranges a money transfer, according to police.

"PSP does not solicit convicted sex offenders for any type of monetary compensation to gain compliance with registration requirements," the state police said in a news release. "Anyone who receives such a telephone call should not initiate any type of financial transaction but rather attempt to verify the caller's phone, obtain as much information as possible about the caller, take detailed notes on the caller's instructions provided and immediately report the call to their local law enforcement agency."

Pennsylvania State Police say that issues concerning compliance with registration requirements for convicted sex offenders can only be resolved by the individual appearing at an approved registration website or by personal contact with a law enforcement official.
