ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA —SPS Technologies has planned a propane tank flare-off for Monday as the company tries to recover from a massive fire at its location on Highland Avenue in mid-February.

The Abington Township Fire Marshal said the flare-off at SPS Technologies will occur from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday.

A flare-off is a controlled burning of high vapor pressure liquid or compressed gas to reduce or control the pressure and/or dispose of the product.

The fire marshal said residents may see flames in a remote area on the property from a piece of equipment designed for this purpose. They may also hear loud noises during the operation, the fire marshal said.

This is a normal operation that propane companies conduct regularly and should not be a cause for concern.

The reason for the operation is the removal of an existing onsite propane tank, which is not inside the structure but located approximately 75 feet from the building.

The operation is being conducted by a licensed propane supply company in coordination with the Abington Township Fire Marshal.

Nearly 70 fire companies from the Philadelphia region battled the blaze for several days that severely damaged the 600,000-square-foot building.
