After a wet and chilly May, temperatures will warm up this week with highs in the low 90s predicted. There is also the threat of haze in the atmosphere due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.

"Fair and tranquil weather will dominate through at least midweek with a general warming trend in temperatures," the National Weather Service said. The heat will peak Thursday, when a high near 90 degrees is expected.

Additionally, smoke from Canadian wildfires is spreading across the eastern US. In the Philadelphia region, the smoke is not expected to impact air quality. "The smoky skies will likely linger at times into early next week," the National Weather Service said.

During the spring and summer of 2023, smoke from large wildfires in Quebec and Ontario was significant across the region, and caused multiple days of air quality warnings.

That threat is not expected at this time.

"Most of the time, the smoke will be high-flying and dim the sun, leading to vivid sunrises and sunsets and causing a hazy appearance to the sky overhead," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said.

"However, there will be episodes where the smoke can reach the lower levels of the atmosphere and affect visibility and air quality," Buckingham added. "That could be a safety concern for travel in extreme cases and pose health problems for some individuals with respiratory issues."
