PA Highway Is Most Dangerous In U.S., Study Says

PENNSYLVANIA — As the holidays approach and more and more drivers take to the roads around Pennsylvania, drivers should exercise extra caution on one of the most highly trafficked routes in the eastern half.

Interstate 95, which runs through Pennsylvania for 44 miles from the Delaware state line to Bristol in Bucks County, was named the most dangerous highway in the United States in a recent study.

I-95 had the highest number of fatalities in 2019, according to The Zebra, an insurance comparison site which organized the study.

The latest data (2019 stats per NHTSA):

• 284 fatalities
• 14.88 fatalities per 100 miles

"Many of these accidents occurred in the northeast in the winter, when road conditions were far from ideal. A large portion of accidents also occurred on the east coast of Florida in Jacksonville and Brevard County, which sits outside of Orlando," according to The Zebra.

This major artery runs north to south along the entire East Coast of the United States, from Miami, Florida to the Houlton–Woodstock Border Crossing between Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

One other interstate highway that crosses through New Jersey also made the top 10 list. I-80 came in at number 9.

I-80 had 209 fatalities or 7.21 fatalities per 100 miles, according to The Zebra.

Some good news to note if you are traveling, the national average for a gallon of gasoline dropped three cents in the past week to $3.77.

"While the national average has barely budged, there are now about 13 states with some stations selling gas below $3 a gallon," said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. "More gas stations could follow, which may be a big help with road trip budgeting as Thanksgiving approaches."
