130-MPH Tornado Touched Down In Montgomery Co., Officials Confirm

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a powerful EF-2 rated tornado touched down in Montgomery County Wednesday.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — A powerful tornado with peak winds of 130 miles per hour touched down in Montgomery County on Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service confirmed, as the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought historic damage to the region.

Officials put out a statement Thursday afternoon briefly confirming what stormchasers and meteorologists were confident of during the height of the storm Wednesday night.

The twister ran from Fort Washington and Upper Dublin Township up to Horsham Township, officials said. The length of the Route 309 corridor was investigated by authorities on Thursday.

Further details on the extent of the storm's path and the damage left behind is expected Thursday night or Friday, the National Weather Service said.

The tornado's wind speeds rank it as an EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. It's the fourth most powerful classification out of six different rankings on the scale.

At least three people were killed by the storm in Montgomery County, as thousands lost power and the Schuylkill River and Perkiomen Creek flooded to all-time high crests.

Several other tornadoes were investigated in the area Thursday, including multiple different twisters in Bucks County and one in Philadelphia.
