Trial Begins In Montco Over Disputed Legal Fees Stemming From Philly Food Truck Explosion
A lawyer is in a legal fight with his former Blue Bell-based law firm over who should collect a multi-million-dollar referral fee.
NORRISTOWN, PA — A civil trial is now playing out at the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas involving a lawyer who is seeking to obtain a huge, $11 million referral fee stemming from a case he worked on involving a teen who was badly injured in a food truck explosion in Philadelphia back in 2014.
The trial that began in Norristown on Monday, which is being reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, involves Richard DeMarco and the Blue Bell-based law firm where he previously worked — Elliott Greenleaf — and stems from a dispute over who should get the hefty legal referral fee for working on the case of then-17-year-old Zoila Santos, who was badly burned during a food truck explosion eight years ago, which resulted in a huge monetary settlement.
DeMarco reportedly feels he is entitled to the referral fee since Santos was his client, but the law firm is countering that it should receive the money since DeMarco was an employee when he worked on the case, according to the newspaper report.
