Armed Man Causes Standoff At SEPTA Station Monday: Lower Merion Police

A man was taken into custody after he threatened railroad workers with a gun at the Overbrook SEPTA station early Monday, police said.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — A standoff and barricade situation at a SEPTA station ended with an armed man being taken into custody early Monday morning.

Lower Merion Township Police were called to the Overbrook Train Station at 12:36 a.m. Monday for a report of an armed man in the area.

Police said the man first spotted by railroad workers as he walked west along train tracks.

The man went into a signal shed on the Lower Merion side of the tracks, where police said he confronted workers by brandishing a handgun and making threatening statements.

The workers ran off and called 911.

When police showed up, the man refused to listen to their commands and barricaded himself in the shed, police said.

Authorities established a perimeter and the Lower Merion Police activated their Emergency Response Team.

Police spoke with the man, who came out of the shed and was placed in custody at about 3:30 a.m. Authorities found a handgun in the shed, police said.

The man was treated at a local hospital and was released into police custody.

No one was hurt in the incident. The City Avenue and the rail corridor were closed during the incident but have since reopened.

Lower Merion Police were aided by Philadelphia Police, SEPTA Police, AMTRAK Police, AMTRAK railroad workers, Haverford Township Police, Narberth Ambulance, and Narberth Fire Company in responding to the incident.
