LMSD Ensuring 'Safety, Belonging' Amid Education Executive Order Fears

The district said "developing critical thinkers who respect themselves and others" is "necessary for the preservation of our country."

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — As President Donald Trump's executive orders and threats to dismantle federal bureaucracy sow seeds of fear in the public sphere, the Lower Merion School District said it is committed to upholding its own policies and values among the community.

In a letter posted to the district's website, the school board and Acting Superintendent Larry Mussoline said the district will continue its "work to ensure that all students and staff feel a sense of safety and belonging in our schools."

"We know these assurances must be in place if we expect children to achieve to their highest potential," the letter reads. "We commit to these priorities for all students and staff, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, immigration status, disability or any other identity."

District officials also reiterated their adherence to its policies that "the values of our community."

"Our Policies guide us every day and anchor us when navigating difficult times," the letter reads. "The Board regularly reviews Policies to ensure they comply with currently applicable law."

While the district remained committed to its policies, the letter also recognizes "the responsibility of state and local school districts to direct and control our curriculum, teaching and learning.

"To this end, we will continue to support our teachers and staff as they engage in the important work these Policies mandate."

"Education is a fundamental right guaranteed to all children," the letter reads. "Developing critical thinkers who respect themselves and others is not only the goal of our schools, but also necessary for the preservation of our country."
