PHILADELPHIA — About a year ago, Hollywood star Amanda Seyfried went on a ride along with Philadelphia Police.

The purpose was research for an upcoming series that focuses on addiction and murders in Philadelphia.

"Long Bright River" is an adaptation of a novel by Liz Moore, a Temple University Associate Professor. The book was featured on President Barack Obama's favorite books of the year list and was named a "Good Morning America" Book Club Pick.

"In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds," a description of the novel reads. "One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don't speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling."

Seyfried, an Allentown native, stars as Mickey.
