Vehicles Crash When Passing Firefighters Responding To Crash

When Lower Merion firefighters were leaving the scene of a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning on I-76, two more vehicles crashed nearby.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Two two-vehicle crashes occurred on Interstate 76 in Lower Merion Township over the weekend, according to emergency responders.

Firefighters were called to mile marker 336.8 at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday for a two-vehicle crash with entrapment.

Crews found one person trapped and determined the entire passenger side wall needed to be removed due to the vehicle's driver side being lodged against a barrier.

First responders removed the passenger side door, and the driver was able to get out of the vehicle by climbing across the center console.

As firefighters were preparing to leave the crash scene, two other vehicles not involved in the initial crash collided, according to officials.

The crash happened right next to a Belmont Hills Fire Company truck when the vehicles were rushing to get out of the backlogged traffic and didn’t merge properly, the fire company said.

No one was hurt in this crash, and no fire company vehicles were struck.

"For everyone’s safety, PLEASE REMEMBER TO SLOW DOWN AND MOVE OVER." the fire company said on social media. "You’ll never make it to your destination if you can’t apply the brakes when passing an accident scene."
