Volunteers Sought For Code Blue Shelters In Lower Merion

A Code Blue is declared when nighttime real-feel temperatures hit 32 degrees or lower. Four local churches act as shelters on those nights.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — With frigid weather bearing down on the Philadelphia region, Lower Merion officials are looking for residents willing to step up when temperatures drop.

Volunteers are sought to work shifts during Code Blue cold weather declarations in Lower Merion Township.

The Lower Merion Code Blue shelter will run from Dec. 1 through March 31, 2026, beginning at Our Mother of Good Counsel in Bryn Mawr. Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, Ardmore Presbyterian Church, and Ardmore United Methodist Church will serve as shelters in January, February, and March, respectively. Volunteers are needed to all four locations.

Each shelter houses up to five men per night when temperatures dip to 32 degrees or lower.

Volunteers work in teams of two over two shifts — 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. — each night.

Anyone 18 and older can sign up to host on Code Blue nights in Lower Merion.

Those who sign up must provide Pennsylvania criminal background check results, as well as attend in-person training at 7 p.m. on Nov. 24 at Our Mother of Good Counsel.
