A would-be safecracker used power tools to open a hole in a Bala Cynwyd Wawa's rear wall, but after more than an hour of trying to open the store's safe, he fled empty-handed, police said.

About 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, a manager and store clerk of the at Conshohocken State Road and Rock Hill Road arrived to begin preparing the store to open. But when they encountered an unfamiliar man in the back of the store, they ran back outside and called police.

Officers checked the store but found no one. Surveillance footage indicated the man had probably been trying since about 3 a.m. to open the safe. The safe remained unopened, and no store merchandise was believed stolen.
