District Conference to Focus on Girls' Empowerment, Leadership

The second-annual Lower Merion School District Girls Leadership Conference is planned for Saturday, Feb. 28.

Mark your calendars: The second-annual Girls Leadership Conference is planned for Saturday, Feb. 28.

The conference, for Lower Merion School District high school girls, “will focus on girls empowerment and leadership skills,” the district said.

Workshops will be lead by recent Lower Merion and Harrison graduates; college mentors; and community members.

The goals of the conference, according to the district, are:

  • Help girls identify their unique leadership style so that they can chart their post-high school plans;
  • Teach skills to help girls gain confidence, advocate for themselves and understand basic financial matters;
  • Educate girls about gender issues that that are immediately relevant to their success in school and the workplace;
  • Discuss ways that girls can handle gender discrimination and inequities in schools, the workplace and society at large; and
  • Connect girls to young women college mentors who will share their experiences and views about gender issues in college, internships and jobs.

The conference is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Harrison High School. Registration is limited to 150, and registration deadline is Feb. 25.
