Fire Ruins Garage, Melts Cars

A couple's home is uninhabitable, but no one was hurt.

Fire severely damaged a Penn Valley home and garage and destroyed two cars early Tuesday morning, Lower Merion Fire Chief Charles McGarvey said.

No injuries were reported.

Police and firefighters dispatched to 423 Woodbine Avenue at 2:28 a.m. found fire in a garage attached to the home. Responding fire companies included , , , Merion and Gladwyne, as well as township police and Narberth Ambulance, McGarvey said.

Fire melted steel supports in the garage, spread into the house and charred two cars parked outside. Firefighters finished their work by 5 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

County property records show the homeowners bought in July 2004 for $463,000. They could not be reached for comment; McGarvey said the house is uninhabitable.
