This Weekend: Beekeeping, Tomato Tasting and Chess

Looking for something to do in the Greater Philadelphia area the weekend of Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29? Use this guide as a primer.

  • Where: Harriton House, 500 Harriton Road, Bryn Mawr
  • When: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday
  • What: Honeybees are kept in the Harriton Park. Adults and children can try on beesuits, visit the hives, and help extract honey. This annual beekeeping program and honey harvest is co-sponsored by The Harriton Association and Riverbend Environmental Education Center in Gladwyne. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are necessary.

  • Where: Rushton Farm, Delchester and Goshen roads, Newtown Square
  • When: 5 p.m. Saturday
  • What: For $20, anyone can taste Rushton Farm's large variety of tomatoes, along with included wine and beer. Register at wctrust.org. Members of Willistown Conservation Trust's CSA produce service get in for $10.

  • Where: West Chester Library, 415 N. Church St., West Chester
  • When: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday
  • What: Kids ages 6-18 years old are invited to the West Chester Public Library to learn to play chess or work on their game. The program is free. Call 610-696-1721 for more information.
