Better Crushed Than Never—Whitehall Police Find Stolen Washing Machines

The incident also leads to drug charges for the roommate of the accused thief.

Whitehall Borough police tracked down two stolen coin-operated washing machines late last month. The trouble was they were found at a local recycling plant, where they had already been crushed.

On May 28 at around 11:50 a.m., police officers went to 1696 Skyline Dr. in the Wallace (Prospect) Park area to meet with an employee of a company that supplies washing equipment to the owners of that apartment building, Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said. The employee informed the officers that two white Whirlpool-brand washing machines—valued at $2,200 each—had been taken from the building.

Police then contacted local recycling companies, and one of them had recently accepted washers that fit the missing machines' descriptions. Officers went to that company's location and, despite the state of the crushed machines, were able to match both sets of serial numbers.

The recycling company's employees were also able to provide identification to police of the person who sold the machines to them, which eventually led to the arrest, Dolfi said, of 34-year-old Gregg Sunday of 1607 Parkline Dr., also in the Prospect Park area.

On May 29 at around 7:30 a.m., while looking through Sunday's apartment for items associated with the theft of the washers, Dolfi said, police found illegal paraphernalia and drugs in the possession of Sunday's roommate—30-year-old Brian Sunday.

Brian is being charged with those offenses, while Gregg is being charged with theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief.
