Bensalem Girl Hit In Bus-Stop Crash Is Out Of Hospital

The 12-year-old from Bensalem spent more than a month in the hospital after being struck while boarding a school bus in January.

BENSALEM, PA — Olivia Adelman may have turned 12 years old in the hospital. But her classmates weren't going to let the Bensalem girl — who was hit by a pickup truck while she was getting onto a school bus last month — go without celebrating.

Olivia, a student at St. Charles Borromeo School in Bensalem, spent more than a month in the hospital after the Jan. 6 crash, which happened at about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Bensalem Boulevard and Timber Lane.

A 35-year-old woman from Croydon has been charged with DUI in the crash, which police say happened while the school bus's stop signal was activated.

Olivia returned to school last week. And, on Saturday, her classmates from St. Charles threw her a belated birthday party. The party, at the VFW post in Bensalem, had a "Lilo & Stitch" theme and included fundraising efforts for Olivia's continued care and treatment.

"Olivia was missed by our entire community after a tragic accident left her hospitalized for over a month," the school said last week in a Facebook post. "Please continue to pray for Olivia's healing. We're so happy to welcome her family back to our #SCBFamily!"

At Saturday's party, Olivia's friends — who had raised money by selling candy and donating their allowances — gave her a custom, flowery wheelchair cover. The VFW donated the space for the party and and Vincenzo's Pizza donated food.

Meanwhile, supporters are continuing to raise money to help pay for for what is expected to be a long recovery for Olivia.
