Bucks Coronavirus Numbers Are Lowest Since March

The number of new cases dipped into single digits over the weekend and are low enough to meet the state standard for more reopenings.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA — Bucks County's number of new coronavirus cases has hit its lowest level since March.

Last week, the county averaged fewer than 21 new COVID-19 cases per day, according to health officials. And new-case numbers dropped into the single digits over the weekend, with Saturday's eight new cases the lowest single-day number since March 21.

According to the Bucks County Department of Health, 145 new cases were reported last week, an average of 20.7 cases per day.

That's lower than the roughly 22 cases per day Bucks County would need to be reporting to qualify for loosened restrictions under Gov. Tom Wolf's coronavirus plan.

No county statistics were reported on Sunday. But Monday's two-day total of 26 represents an average of just 13 new cases per day. And that count includes six cases that actually are too old to still be considered infectious, county officials said.

"A total of 34 cases over the last three days is something we should be very optimistic about," said Dr. David Damsker, director of the county health department. "We are a week and a half into the yellow phase and a ways out from the large protests that occurred."

Three deaths from the coronavirus were reported over the past three days in Bucks County. All three were over age 85, lived in long-term care facilities and had underlying health issues, officials said.

Of the 34 cases reported Saturday through Monday, 12 were spread through household contacts, 10 are residents of long-term care facilities, two were transmitted in healthcare settings, two were from workplace contact and just four were pure community spread, the health department said.

In Bucks County, 82 people remained hospitalized Monday with coronavirus, with 14 of them in critical condition and on ventilators. To date, 493 people have died with COVID-19 in Bucks County.
