Bryn Mawr Student And Trump Supporter Harassed, Drops Out of School: Reports

A Bryn Mawr College student was harassed online after she asked for a ride to a Donald Trump event, eventually causing her to leave school.

A Bryn Mawr College student has dropped out of school after being harassed when it was revealed that she was a supporter of Donald Trump.

Bryn Mawr and Haverford College's student newspaper, the English House Gazette, first reported that 18-year-old freshman Andi Moritz came under fire when she posted to a Facebook group asking for a ride to a Trump event. She posted on the Bryn Mawr Ride Share Group, a page which appears to have since been deleted, asking if anyone wanted to carpool to a canvassing event in Springfield on September 20.

Her post contained no political statement, other than the straightforward request. The response, however, was reportedly overwhelming. Some quotes included:

“Nobody has the right to an opinion of bigotry. 0 Tolerance for fascists!"

“It would be great if you didn’t invoke the honor code to justify your racism…”

“So, you want to feel safer on your way to make the world less safe for everyone else…?’

“My dad is a Republican, my mom is a Democrat; I’ve grown up with political conversation to be very normal,” Moritz told the English House Gazette. “Most of my friends at high school were very liberal; my boyfriend is very liberal.”

Moritz eventually called the college's suicide hotline, Philly.com reported. She left school two days after the posting.

Perhaps most disturbingly, when Moritz went to see the school counselor at Bryn Mawr, she said that the counselor defended the Internet commenters. Moritz criticized the school for being a "bubble" and called the notion of "safe spaces" hypocritical because they were only safe for individuals who followed a certain ideology.

Republican intimidation is not a term that has been frequently bandied about, as incidents of racial intimidation and hate crimes have been reported nationwide since the election, including at nearby Villanova University and the University of Pennsylvania.

However, Mortiz is not the first local college conservative to describe a close-minded atmosphere on campus. West Chester University student Cassie Hewlett drew the attention of Fox News' "Risk and Reward" host Deirdre Bolton for a blog post attacking common misconceptions over Trump voters.

"I am not racist," she wrote in the post, published the day after the election. "I am not homophobic. I am not sexist. I am not a misogynist. I am for free market. I am for stronger foreign policy. I am for small business. I am for my family. I am Republican."

Hewlett said that professors and students created an atmosphere where she felt unwelcome.

"It was a little bit intimidating going into class knowing that I am Republican and that I voted Republican," Hewlett said in November. "My professors kind of prefaced class with the assumption that everyone in class did not vote for Trump."

Bryn Mawr reportedly would not comment on the situation with Hewlett.
