Local Chef Wins Emmy Nod for 'Taste of History'

Chef Walter Staib of Bryn Mawr has been nominated—again—as best host.

Chef Walter Staib, who regularly films episodes for his PBS cooking show A Taste of History at , was nominated for best host in the 2012 Emmys.

A Taste of History has now been nominated for seven Emmy Awards in three seasons; the show has won three. 

Staib cooks over an open hearth fire recreating the recipes of the founding fathers.

"Whenever I don't film on location, I do it in Bryn Mawr," said Staib, who is also proprietor of City Tavern in Philadelphia. "It's just a fantastic setting."

He said the 18th-century kitchen provides a good workspace, adding it is nice working with a curator who understands its historical aspects.

"I live literally across the street, and sometimes I meditate, sometimes I think I am talking to Charles Thomson," Staib said with a laugh.

Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress, lived at Harriton in the 1700s.

In a press release, the German-born Bryn Mawr resident joked: "My passion is preserving American culinary heritage. It took a German to come along and teach Americans about how sophisticated their food was well before the industrial revolution."

The show's fourth season is currently airing, and Staib and Multi Media have begun filming season 5, according to the release. The show is seen locally in Philadelphia on WHYY Saturdays at noon and in New Jersey on NJTV Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

"If I win this Emmy, it would be four Emmys in three seasons," Staib said. "It's spectacular. I'm excited this would be my second one as a host."
