Newcomers Club Offers Main Liners a Place to Meet

The Main Line Newcomers Club hosts new member coffee meetings and a variety of smaller group activities.

I just moved to Bryn Mawr a few months ago, so when I heard about the Main Line Newcomers Club, I jumped at the opportunity to attend their new member coffee on Thursday at Saxby’s in Haverford.

It was fun, casual, and the other attendees—probably about 15 of us—were friendly. We introduced ourselves, told each other where we’re from, where we live now, and how long we’ve been here. It was informal, and those sitting near one another broke off into their own conversations.

People have moved from faraway places like Georgia and France and from closer places like New York and Chester County (that’s me). People have been here for as little as a few months, and as long as several years.

And they’re people I likely wouldn’t have met otherwise, and who might not have met each other—though some of us live right around the corner from each other, and others had kids in the same grade at the same school.

The Main Line Newcomers Club, which has been around since 1951, has something for everyone. It has about 300 members overall, but it has different groups within the club to accommodate different interests—book clubs, gallivanters, mothers of young children, tennis, art appreciation, and several others.

But mostly, as one woman said, it’s about meeting new people.

While the new and prospective member coffee is free for anyone to attend, there are annual fees for those who decide to join.

So if you’re new to the Main Line, like I am, you might want to check it out. Visit the club's website for more information and to find out about the different groups within it: http://www.mainlinenewcomers.org/
