Supervisors: It's Too Early In Negotiations To Vote On Gas Lease

North Strabane Township supervisors on Tuesday tabled a decision regarding a Marcellus Shale gas lease.

Supervisors said it was too early in the negotiation process to vote on a non-surface lease between the township and either Range Resources or Rice Drilling.

The non-surface lease would consist of 81.8 acres of property off state Route 519 - which would include the municipal building and new multi-million park.

While these leases generally include a per-acre upfront payment and percentage of any royalties, those details were not discussed publicly.

Locally, Canon-McMillan School District in 2011 signed a non-surface lease with Range Resources.Β school directors last week unanimously approved a five-year lease withΒ Range ResourcesΒ for non-surface Marcellus Shale drilling on district property.

The lease of more than 16.8 acres of property represents 25 parcelsβ€”which includes all district buildings and all of its fields.

The lease agreement called for a $2,900-per-acre up-front payment, as well as a 16.75 percent royalty on any gas extracted.
