Composting, School Open House This Week in Chestnut Hill
Stuff is happening at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy as well as the Morris Arboretum.

Here's what's going on this week in Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy.
Open House: On Tuesday, October 8, at 8:30 a.m., Springside Chestnut Hill Academy will host an open house. Here's how they describe the event: "The best way to learn about Springside Chestnut Hill Academy is to visit the school during the school day! Join us for Inside SCH, an intimate Open House forum that enables families to visit classrooms and engage in discussions with school leaders. Space is limited, so please email kmersky@sch.org to reserve your space today."
Gardening for Wildlife: Taught by Marc Radell, Penn State Certified Master Gardener More than twice the amount of land that is conserved as open space in Southeast Pennsylvania is used for residential purposes, which means that how homeowners maintain their property has a dramatic impact on area wildlife. In this class, you will learn how to enhance your property’s potential to provide food, water, and shelter for a variety of wildlife in a sustainable and aesthetic way. It will cover the backyard habitat principles developed by leading environmental organizations and recommend specific plants and garden practices for attracting songbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial wildlife based upon the instructor’s experience rehabilitating his own 4.5-acre property, working as an environmental professional, and practicing as a Master Gardener Volunteer.

Compost This: Taught by Lucy Dinsmore, Rosarian, Morris Arboretum
This class will demonstrate the how’s and why’s of making compost and compost tea for your home garden. We will start by exploring the variety of materials available to compost and the methods used for building bins and storing these materials at home. We will build a compost pile together, so that you can easily replicate it at home. We will also demystify the idea of “compost tea” by exploring the equipment used at the Morris Arboretum and demonstrating the brewing process. Participation in handling the compost materials is optional, so dress accordingly if you plan to get messy. This course meets at the Horticulture Center at Bloomfield Farm. Enter the Arboretum on the road opposite from the public garden entrance. Park in the parking lot and follow the signs to the Horticulture Center.
