Cranberry Resolution Asks Post Office to Reconsider Cluster Mailbox Plan

The post office wants to implement the multiple mailbox units in new neighborhoods as a cost saving measure.

In a 5-0 vote, Cranberry officials at Thursday’s Board of Supervisors meeting approved a resolution asking the post office to reconsider a plan to install cluster box mail units in the township’s new residential developments.

“It’s not an ideal situation certainly for single family homes,” said Supervisor Dick Hadley.

A copy of the resolution also will be to sent to local and U.S. legislators.

The plan from the post office eliminates individual mailboxes in favor of centrally–located cluster box units in Cranberry’s new neighborhoods.

In a letter to the township, Donald Snyder, manager operations program support for the post office in the western district, said the multiple mailbox system would be more cost effective, as well as safer, for mail carriers.

Cranberry officials disagreed, citing significant challenges for incorporating the cluster mailboxes into neighborhoods with sufficient parking, lighting and delivery of items, including new phonebooks, newspapers and other packages.

Officials also noted emergency responders depend on clearly marked curbside addresses.

“It will slow down emergency responses,” township manager Jerry Andree has said.

About a dozen new neighborhoods currently are in the works for Cranberry.
