Central Bucks School Board To Vote On Health And Safety Plan

The Central Bucks School Board is slated to vote on its health and safety plan Tuesday, which includes an optional masking policy.

DOYLESTOWN, PA — Members of the Central Bucks School Board will vote on the district's health and safety plan Tuesday, which includes an optional masking policy for students and staff.

Acting Superintendent Abram Lucabaugh announced the policy in a letter to students and families Tuesday. It follows the advice of Bucks County Health Director David Damsker, who has said that masks should be optional in schools given the low risk of spread and serious illness to children, coupled with the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine for anyone 12 and older.

Masks will be optional regardless of vaccination status. While a mask mandate expired in late June, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control are still recommending that unvaccinated people — including young children who are less likely to contract or get seriously ill from the COVID-19 — wear masks in public settings.

The board will also discuss the feasibility of an elementary virtual option for families who indicated an interest in a recent survey. There will be no virtual option for secondary students due to the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine for students ages 12 and older, the district said in previous communications.
