Dharma Bums Cocktail To Benefit Point Pleasant Firefighters, Commemorate '55 Flood

BUCKS COUNTY, PA — A popular Bucks County restaurant and bar is serving a special cocktail during the month of August to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1955 Flood and to raise funds for a fire company that responded to the tragedy.

Aptly named "Wake of the Flood" and sharing its name with a Grateful Dead album, Dharma Bum's latest "Cocktail For a Cause" is made with rum, rosemary, matcha and lime juice. It will also be available in zero proof.

The Point Pleasant restaurant creates a special cocktail each month benefiting a local nonprofit. This month they have designated the all-volunteer Point Pleasant Fire Company, which responded to the flood 70 years ago, as the recipient of its fundraiser.

"It's a great way for us to give back to those people who are the unsung heroes, and in the case of the firefighters, keep us safe," said Steve Trachtenberg who owns the restaurant with his wife, Fiona. "They are our everyday heroes who deal with rescue and services, specifically river rescues on the Delaware River."

In August 1955, back to back hurricanes - Connie and Diane - caused severe flooding here, sending the Delaware River over its banks, sweeping away homes, businesses and destroying bridges in Point Pleasant and in Yardley.

The flood continues to hold the record as the worst flood on the Delaware and is used as a benchmark to rate modern day flooding events.

Previous "Cocktails for a Cause" fundraisers have benefited Rolling Harvest Food Rescue, Helping Friendly Farm, Aark, Pig Placement Network at Ross Mills Farm, Friends of the Delaware Canal, Last Chance Ranch, Bucks County Audubon Society, Aquetong Watershed Association and others.
