DOYLESTOWN, PA — The Doylestown Planning Commission has recommended approval of a developer's plan for apartments and commercial space at the site of the former Intelligencer newspaper building in Doylestown.

Planners recommended approval of the project at its Tuesday meeting. Villanova-based developer Cornerstone Tract, LLC is seeking the borough's permission for a mixed-use development at 333 N. Broad St., including 233 apartments, 10,000 feet of commercial space and a parking garage.

The commission voted 4-1 on Tuesday to recommend the project be given final approval by Doylestown Borough Council.

Planning Commission member Heather Mahaley voted against the recommendtion, citing concerns about density and the affordability of the apartments.

"That's a lot of traffic and people in a small area," Mahaley said. "I think it's great but it's too many apartments. People working in those shops can't afford to live there, and that to me is an issue."

Before the project can move forward, it requires approval from Doylestown Borough Council. It also requires that council approve a new zoning overlay district, which would allow for apartments to be constructed in an area that is currently zoned non-residential.

Final approval of the ordinance and the plan is expected to be considered on borough council's agenda in April.
