DOYLESTOWN, PA — Hundreds of visitors descended on the grounds of the Tileworks over the weekend to experience the artistry of Halloween.

As cool autumn temperatures settled in at the courtyard of Henry Mercer’s landmark Tileworks, a handful of professional pumpkin carvers demonstrated their artistic talents while raising funds for the BC Cares Education Foundation.

Throughout Saturday afternoon and into the early evening hours, visitors watched as artists turned pumpkins into phenomenal works of art, including several scary spiders, scenes from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds,” the Hindenburg Disaster, an Easter basket filled with candy, and others.

Curtis May, an art teacher at Pennsbury High School, was back this year to defend his title. He transformed his pumpkin into a portrait of actor Jimmy Stewart from the movie, “Vertigo.” Last year’s portrait of Pablo Picasso won him the event’s Grand Prize.

Also working their Halloween magic were Jeff and Jackie Brown who turned their pumpkin into high-sea drama with a sea monster emerging from the deep and wrapping its tentacles around a pirate ship. Their pumpkin won the People’s Choice award.

Another stunning creation was a pumpkin depicting the Hindenburg Disaster, complete with 3-D smoke billowing from the ship. The disaster scene, created by Chalfont’s own Mike Cousart, won this year’s grand prize.

As the evening descended on Saturday, the pumpkin masterpieces took on the bewitching glow of the season. The two-day event also included musical acts by the School of Rock and Friends, tours of the Tileworks, art vendors, Trunk or Treating, food trucks and lots more.

Proceeds from the event benefit BC Cares Educational Foundation, a nonprofit that empowers youth to thrive through developmental programs and initiatives that promote educational success and community involvement.
