CHALFONT, PA — Two friends of a local teahouse owner who died of cancer last year are planning to reopen the shop in their friend's memory.

Kathy Heck, who ran The Talking Teacup for more than 15 years before retiring in 2019, died of cancer in November 2020. Nine months later, Patti Fitzpatrick and Nicole Boyer plan to reopen the shop at 301 W Butler Ave in Chalfont.

Before she passed away, Heck wrote Fitzpatrick a letter urging her not to give up on her dreams and keep moving forward. Later, when Fitzpatrick fell ill with COVID-19 during the beginning of the pandemic, she had time to contemplate the future, and she kept thinking about that teahouse.

She reached out to Boyer, a friend from junior high, and the pair set out on a path to reopen the dormant tea room. They both left their full-time jobs — Fitzpatrick was in marketing, Boyer in retail — to pursue their dream of running a small business.

"It’s definitely something that’s been scary for both of us to walk away [from]," Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick then reached out to Heck's husband, who owned the building and appeared open to the idea. After some extensive remodeling, they plan to open sometime in August.

Menu items will include teas, scones, salads, quiches, desserts and pastries. Eventually, they plan to host weddings in a barn in the rear of the property and build up a garden and greenhouse for local produce. The tearoom will feature a memorial dedicated to Kathy Heck.
